Der US-Amerikaner Kevin Morby füttert seit seinem Debütalbum Harlem River aus dem Jahr 2013 stetig seinen wachsenden Kultstatus. Mit seinem mittlerweile fünften Album Oh My God, das am 26. April via Dead Oceans erscheinen wird, sollte sich dieser Vorgang rapide fortsetzen, ist das neuste Album aus der Feder des Texaners doch nicht nur sein erstes wahres Konzeptalbum – nein, es behandelt auch noch Religion und Spiritualität und zum Album wird es auch noch einen Kurzfilm geben.
Was den Sound des Albums betrifft, so beinhaltet die neue Single Nothing Sacred / All Things Wild den Schlüssel zu dem Sound, den Morby und Produzent Sam Cohen entwickelt haben und der das gesamte Album definiert. „Nothing Sacred / All Things Wild was the moment that Sam and I stumbled into what would become the sonic landscape of Oh My God by breaking the songs down to their parts and doing away with a conventional band,” erklärt Kevin Morby. „Rather than I play the song on guitar as originally intended, Sam suggested I only sing while he play organ and Nick [Kinsey], who is the drummer of my live band, play congas. Within moments of the first take it became clear what the record was to become, and how we wanted to represent the songs. What you’re hearing here is a first take and the sound of us walking into a new discovery.”
