Seit der Veröffentlichung des selbstbetitelten Debüts 2017 ist einiges bei Barely Autumn passiert. Gegründet von dem in Brüssel lebenden Songwriter Nico Kennes, ist die Band etwa zwei Jahren in Westeuropa unterwegs gewesen. Doch nach der Tour ist vor dem Album und aufgrund der erlebten Ereignisse hat sich auch im Sound des Projektes einiges getan. Denn die Band lässt ihre gewohnte Melancholie auf der Basis von Akustikgitarre hinter sich und bringt mit ihren neuen Songs einen pulsierenden Indie-Rock- Sound der 90er Jahre hervor, der sowohl frisch als auch dynamisch ist. Zu hören ist das so schon mal auf der neuen Single Alix, die als erster Vorbote eines für Frühjahr 2020 angedachten Zweitwerks dient, und die inhaltlich die Art von romantischen Intrigen, die zum Scheitern verurteilt sind, bevor sie überhaupt angefangen haben handelt. Frontmann Nico Kennes selbst beschreibt den Song wie folgt: “Our new single Alix is about being stuck in a relationship that’s doomed to fail, but then still regretting it when it finally comes to an end… That feeling of not really knowing what to do with yourself, ignoring what’s best for you and indulging into something you shouldn’t, is symbolised by the random eating of a cake in the video. It’s a way of – ironically – celebrating the mess you’re in. I found myself in these kind of situations a couple of times over the last few years. And I think it’s something many other people can relate to as well.”
