Beim gerade erst beendeten diesjährigen Haldern Pop Festival gehörte Barns Courtney zu den umjubelsten Newcomer-Auftritten und der Wahl-Londoner legt direkt nach! Denn nach Support-Shows für Musik-Größen wie The Who, Blur, The Libertines, Ed Sheeran und The Kooks und diversen ausverkauften Europashows im vergangenen und auch in diesem Jahr kündigt Barns Courtney sein neues Album 404 für den 6. September an! Die zehn neuen Songs erzählen vom Übergang ins Erwachsenenleben und dem damit einhergehenden Gefühlschaos zwischen Verlust, Frustration und Optimismus. Die Aufnahmesessions für sein zweites Album fanden auf Wunsch des 28-Jährigen mitten in der Nacht statt. Barns Courtneys charakteristische tiefe Vocals wurden dabei in nur einem Take aufgenommen und sind zum Großteil improvisiert. 404 ist wahrscheinlich sein bisher persönlichstes Werk, wie der Sänger selbst erläutert: “The album circulates around the themes of existential authenticity, and how we lose ourselves as we age. A 404 error is when a computer can’t find what it’s looking for. It connects with the server but the page isn’t there anymore. As a child of the digital age, the comparison felt apt. And although in some ways, our former lives still exist inside of us, they’re ultimately hollow shells of what they once were, living breathing experiences. We can follow the links to our past, but there’s nothing there. It’s a painful realization and one that fascinated me whilst writing the record in my friends’ old bedroom in the backwaters of Yaxley where we first started almost 10 years ago.”
Und als weiteren Vorboten aus dem neuen Album, veröffentlicht Barns auch gleich den Song Hollow, über den er sagt: “Hollow is a tropical bedroom jam between me and Look Mum No Computer [seinem besten Freund und Songwriting-Partner, Anm. des Labels]. It’s pretty much all Fender Tele and Kosmo, the Mad Max garbage synth. In keeping with the themes of 404, it’s all about emptiness.”
