Nun ist es soweit – man hat es ja zuletzt schon nach der Veröffentlichung des neuen Songs Money vermutet, jetzt ist es offiziell: das neue, dritte Michael Kiwanuka erscheint am 25. Oktober in Form von Kiwanuka. Der 32-jährige Soulmusiker aus London, der mit seinen ersten beiden Alben schon große Erfolge feiern konnte, hat den Nachfolger von Love & Hate wieder mit Danger Mouse und Inflo produziert. In New York, Los Angeles und London wurde aufgenommen und mit You Ain’t The Problem gibt es auch schon einen weiteren neuen Song aus dem Album. In diesem hüllt uns Kiwanuka mit seiner warmen, vollen Stimme ein und nimmt uns mit auf eine psychedelische Reise, die zwar bei den Helden der Vergangenheit wie Gil Scott-Heron, Bobby Womack oder Otis Redding Halt macht, aber gleichzeitig im Hier und Jetzt verwurzelt ist und sich erneut ein Stück weit vom folkgetränkten Vintage-Soul seines Debütalbums Home Again (2012) entfernt…
Über sein neues Album sagt Michael Kiwanuka: “The last album came from an introspective place and felt like therapy, I guess. This one is more about feeling comfortable in who I am and asking what I want to say. Like, how could I be bold and challenge myself and the listener? It is about self-acceptance in a more triumphant rather than melancholy way. It’s an album that explores what it means to be a human being today.”
“When I first signed a record deal, people would ask me, ‘So what are you going to be called?’. And I never thought of that; calling myself Johnny Thunders or whatever, like singers from the past. So, on this album it’s kind of a defiant thing; I’m engaging with who I am and I’m not going to have an alter ego, or become Sasha Fierce or Ziggy Stardust, even though everyone’s telling me I need to be this, that or the other. I can just be Michael Kiwanuka.”
