Der Vorteil an der Digitalisierung und der vernetzten Welt ist, dass wir zu jeder Zeit irgendwas konsumieren und in der Theorie über die verschiedensten Kanäle kommunizieren können. Dass gerade in der aktuellen Situation jeder das Internet zum Glühen bringt, man von den ganzen Live Streams langsam auch genug hat und die Frage, ob man sich via Skype, FaceTime, Zoom oder Houseparty jetzt sieht schon zum Standard gehört, hätte man Anfang des Jahres auch noch nicht gedacht. Jeden hat die Situation anders getroffen und doch sitzen wir alle selben Boot. Gemeinsam alleine sein, um uns gegenseitig zu schützen. Weil es sich hier auch um Musik dreht und Künstler*innen in ihren Texten oft den Nagel auf den Kopf treffen, durften Feng Suave uns hierzu ein paar Fragen beantworten. Denn die Band aus Amsterdam hat ein Händchen dafür zum richtigen Zeitpunkt die passenden Worte mit an die Hand zu geben.
Since we are all at home and practicing social distancing right now – how has your everyday life changed?
It hasn’t changed that much to be honest, other than that we’re not touring at the moment. We keep on writing and recording music together a bit more socially isolated than usual.
What do you do when the feeling of loneliness comes up?
I ring up friends, and chat to them, or go for bike rides around Amsterdam (it’s wonderful now that all the tourists are gone).
Do you think that the current situation has something positive for you, the general public or for your creativity/art?
Well, the whole creative industry is getting hammered as a whole so, no, not for most of us unfortunately. But the silver lining for artists like us is that we get to spend much more time at home writing and recording music. Hopefully good tunes from around the world will spring from this.
In what way has the crisis hit you and what can people / your fans do to help you?
Well, all we would like to ask from our fans is to check out our new songs and to be patient for when we do get to perform 🙂
I’m Warping Here is a glimpse into your youth – which things do you regret not having done?
I regret never having learnt sheet music.
Do you miss the recklessness of youth? How can you keep it up as you get older?
Yeah I do miss it a bit even though I still think of myself as ‘youth’ in a way. We’re 23 and 24 so we still get to be at least a little reckless.
Your top songs and albums, which should not be missing right now?
Been really enjoying Enno Morricones Once Upon a Time in the West soundtrack. It’s perfect for walking through empty quiet streets.
Die Jungs haben schon recht damit, dass man den jugendlich Leichtsinn nicht ganz verlieren sollte. Wie singen sie auch so schön? “’cause it’s the time of your life and it’s gonna level out” – yes it is gonna level out. Social Distancing is gonna level out und alles andere, was einen beschäftigt auch. Das mag jetzt super kitschig klingen, doch wenn man gerade keine echten Umarmungen bekommen kann, muss man sich das Gefühl irgendwie anders zaubern und Feng Suave schenken es einem. Mit I’m Warping Here und dem Chor, der im Hintergrund fleißig “ahhhs” und “ohhhs” singt, fühlt es sich doch ein wenig so an.
Schenken wir doch unseren Lieblingsmusiker*innen einen Stream oder mehr, kaufen ihren Merch oder ihre Platten und freuen uns darauf, sie dann bald wieder live sehen zu können. Vielleicht ist ja dann auch eine Umarmung drinnen…
