Der Songwriter Axel Flóvent hat nach Jahren der Suche seine maßgebliche Inspirationsquelle gefunden: die isländische Hauptstadt Reykjavík liegt in der Faxaflói-Bucht und ist zu großen Teilen vom Nordatlantik umgeben. Das Meer ist also ein ständiger Begleiter der knapp 130000 Einwohner. „Es ist einfach ruhig”, sagt Axel. „Oft ist es einfach nur still hier. In Reykjavík hat man sehr viel Zeit für sich und die eigenen Emotionen und Gedanken. Mein Weg zum Studio und meine Jogging-Strecke liegen direkt am Meer – deswegen der Albumtitel. Als ich Ende 2018 nach Island zurückkehrte, fühlte ich mich angekommen. Ich war nicht mehr auf der Suche sondern schätze jetzt mein Zuhause und sehe die Schönheit darin.”
Doch Axel musste seine Heimat zunächst verlassen, um diese Erkenntnis zu gewinnen. Geboren und aufgewachsen in dem kleinen Fischerdorf Húsavik im Norden des Landes, nahm Flóvent auch dort seine erste EP Forest Fires auf. Der gleichnamige Titeltrack entwickelte sich zu einem Streaming-Phänomen und sammelte über 40 Millionen Streams. Euphorisiert von diesem Erfolg, verließ Axel Island und unterschrieb einen Plattenvertrag bei einem Majorlabel in den Niederlanden. Mit 19 Jahren zog er in seine erste eigene Wohnung, doch fühlte sich sehr isoliert. Er sagt darüber: „Ich sollte eigentlich in einem Musikmekka sein, aber habe meine Wohnung nie verlassen.” So tauschte er Amsterdam kurzerhand gegen die britische Küstenstadt Brighton, wo er seine letzte EP Youthful Hearts aufnahm. Doch auch hier hielt es Flóvent nicht allzu lange, verhalf es es ihm zur „nötigen Einsicht, wieder nach Island zurückzukehren”, wie er sagt. Diesem Plan ließ er taten folgen und zog 2019 in die isländische Hauptstadt Reykjavík, wo er sich auf seine Wurzeln besann und zu seinem DIY-Spirit zurückfand.
Zusammen mit dem Produzenten Ian Grimble (The 1975, Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Mumford & Sons) arbeitete er an neuen Songs, von denen es jetzt mit Tonight den nächsten Vorgeschmack auf das vermeintlich demnächst erscheinende Debütalbum von Flóvent gibt. Das verträumte Klavier legt sich um angedeutete Gitarrenklänge und Flóvent sinniert über „the anxiety of communication in relationships.” Der Junge Isländer erzählt über den Song, der heute bei uns Videopremiere feiert: „I wrote the first ideas for Tonight back in 2015, It has followed me since then as the first steps of the story I’m telling with my upcoming record. I wrote it as the prelude/introduction into the record and it evolved into being one of my favourite songs on the record. It’s a song about finding stability in a place or a moment or a person. It’s about finding stability in something that has been there all along and you’re learning to appreciate it. And it brings this sense of calm into your life that you found what you’re looking for and the irony of it being there all along, you were just not ready to see it yet.“
Über das dazugehörige Video sagt er: „We shot the video near my apartment in Reykjavik, a place I usually go for my evening walks and when I go out for a run. It’s a place in the city but when you go there you can feel a bit like you’re in the country side, It’s a nice way to get a bit of nature but not having to go far. I guess the video plot is a bit the “leaving space for the imagination” kind of approach. But is essentially the main sentence in the song, “you stay by the sea, it keeps you calm and quiet” finding the comfort in this place, laying down on the grass just listening to the waves feel the mind drift off.“
