Mit ihren bisherigen zwei veröffentlichten Singles Internet Religion und Buzzkill sammelte die in Südafrika geborene Wahl-Londonerin Baby Queen, gutbürgerlich Bella Latham, nicht nur ordentlich Streams, die Newcomerin positioniert sich auch als Pop-Prinzessin im Fahrtwasser von Acts wie Charlie XCX, Billie Eilish, Uffie, Lily Allen, Lorde und Co! Das Projekt ist dabei höchstpersönlich und getrieben von den Erfahrungen der jungen Sängerin, die versuchte sich an das Leben in der britischen Hauptstadt zwischen Fashion Partys, Instagram-Inflencern, falschen Persönlichkeiten und Selbst-Obsession zu gewöhnen. Ihre Debüt-EP, die noch bis Ende des Jahres erscheinen soll, erzählt von diesen Erlebnissen, genauso wie ihre neue Single Medicine, die als bittersüßer Ohrwurm daherkommt und heute bei uns Videopremiere feiert! “It’s about a tangle of mental health and navigating your way through this world,” berichtet Bella darüber, “whilst being so unhappy and equally disillusioned with the cyber landscape that we are forced to live inside, and the different ways people might numb themselves, or try to find a place where they can exist in amongst all of this fucking chaos.”
Weiterhin erzählt sie über die Entstehung des Songs: „I’ve been on and off anti-depressants since I was 16 and I wrote Medicine about the side effects you experience in the first two weeks of starting a new prescription. I really wanted the music video to mirror what that has felt like inside my brain. On top of the disconnection depression feeds, SSRI’s are strong and can cause what sometimes feels like an outer-body experience, so when I spoke to the director (Dave J East), I told him I wanted the viewer to feel crazy watching it. The video has a lot of flashing lights and a lot of hallucination type visions. It’s almost as if you don’t know what’s real, or if anything even is real, and that’s what it can feel like when you start taking a strong medication. I’ve always found something really artistic in my madness, and I think this video paints that beautifully. I don’t know how many people can relate to the feeling I’m singing about, so I really wanted to show them. I wanted everybody to be able to imagine it.“
