Nachdem die amerikanischen Synth-Pop-Ikonen zuletzt schon mit der neuen Single Thrill ihr neues Album As Long As You Are für den 9. Oktober via 4AD angekündigt haben, legen die Future Islands heute mit ihrer neuen Single Moonlight nach! Über den Song sagt Frontmann Samuel T. Herring: “Moonlight is a song about love in a depressive state. It’s about recognizing the holes in ourselves and recognizing the circular whole of others. Moonlight is about acceptance because that’s what love allows us all. “I couldn’t see, I had a cloud in my arms, but if I asked you would you say, ‘It’s only rain, nothing more.’””
Zeitgleich zur Single erscheint auch das passende Video dazu, bei dem Will Mayer (BADBADNOTGOOD) Regie geführt hat und in dem Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds, 500 Days of Summer) sowie Callie Hernandez (La La Land, Alien) zu sehen sind.
Das neue Future Islands-Album ist ein Album, das all den Problemen nach dem plötzlichen Erfolg der Band nach dem viral gegangenen Auftritt in der Late Night Show von David Letterman trotzt. Burnout, Selbstzweifel, gesteigerte Erwartungshaltungen – Future Islands haben all diese Phasen bewältigt und mit ihrem neuen Album As Long As You Are hinter sich gelassen – einem Album über Vertrauen und Liebe.
Samuel T Herring hat sein Glück mit einer neuen Partnerin gefunden, in deren schwedischen Heimat er mittlerweile einen Großteil seiner Zeit verbringt, was dem Album einen positiveren Anstrich gegeben und geholfen hat, einige langjährige Wunden zu heilen. “Pulling from my past is a form of therapy,” sagt er darüber, “And being happy for the first time in a long time made me feel freer to explore myself and accept certain truths.”
Während es inhaltlich also etwas weniger emotionale Breitseite gibt, hat sich auch der Sound gewandelt, hat man sich doch dieses Mal mehr Zeit gelassen beim Schreiben und Produzieren der Songs, hat zum ersten Mal selbst die Produktion übernommen und mit dem langjährigen Tour-Drummer Mike Lowry auch ein neues Bandmitglied erstmals im Studio mit dabei. “Sonically, there is more going on,” sagt Gerrit Welmers darüber. “Everyone spent more time with sounds on this record, and we were able to really think about adding things, a lot of guitar and little synth sounds in the background. We all contributed to that.” Das Resultat ist ein vollerer, dichterer Sound, der Herring festhalten lässt: “Our best sounding record ever“
Und das Album zeigt wie gut eine Band inmitten des Scheinwerferlichts erwachsen werden kann, während sie sich selbst treu bleibt. “As an artist, you always have fears that you’re just gonna get old and then people won’t care,” sagt Herring, “but this is what we’re supposed to sound like and, to us, it’s the best we’ve ever sounded. As Long As You Are is another step in defining who Future Islands is, and that’s really important.”
