Nachdem sich die Soul-Herren von Durand Jones & The Indications nach der Veröffentlichung des 2019er Albums American Love Call und der dazugehörigen Tour in alle Himmelsrichtungen verabschiedet hatten und erstmals längere Zeit voneinander getrennt waren, sorgte das Wiedersehen von Aaron Frazer, Durand Jones, Blake Rhein, Steve Okonski und Mike Montgomery für ordentlich Freude und Energie. Diese schlägt sich dann auch im dritten Album der Band wieder, das die US-Amerikaner zuletzt in Form von Private Space für den 30. Juli via Dead Oceans ankündigten. Und für das neue Album hat sich die Band, die zuvor für die Wiederbelebung von erdigem Gospel-Soul und 60s Funk bekannt war, völlig einem mitreisendem Disco-Sound geöffnet! “At the end of the day, I just want people to close their eyes and forget where they are. Just the way a Stevie Wonder album does for me,” sagt Jones darüber, während Rhein ergänzt: “There’s a lot of the band’s original DNA, but it’s not a time capsule.“ Frazer, der Anfang des Jahres mit seinem Solo-Album Introducing… schon für Aufsehen sorgte, fügt hinzu: „We’re actually revealing more of ourselves, a deeper and broader look into who we are as musicians and fans.“
Der neue Sound entstand in Upstade New York, wo die Band sich ausgiebiger als je zuvor Klangexperimenten hingeben konnte: “It was like this buildup of all the ideas, the love, and the need to make music with these guys again,” sagt Jones und weiter: “I want listeners to know that through really rough times something beautiful can be birthed.“ Frazer hofft abschließend: “We’re not out of the woods, but hopefully this allows people to get together again, to share and experience catharsis.”
Warum das Ganze? Die Band hat gestern Abend mit Love Will Work It Out die nächste Single veröffentlicht – ein weiterer Vorbote, der zeigt, wie sich die Band noch mal klanglich entwickelt hat und das die Herren sich darauf voll und ganz der Hoffnung nach den letzten, schwierigen Monaten verschrieben haben: “I want listeners to know that through really rough times something beautiful can be birthed,” sagt Frontmann Jones darüber, der in dem Song singt: “All the people lost made me fall right onto my knees/all I could do was cry and shout/I knew I had to trust the faith that love would work it out.”
Weiter führt die Band aus in einem Statement: “For months into the pandemic and the racial/political chaos that ensued, we found it hard to write. The biggest creative dry spell we’d experienced in a decade. The constant barrage of horrible news felt overwhelming, and songs just seemed inadequate in response to police murdering people in broad daylight. Songs felt inadequate in the face of a virus that decimated communities and kept us apart from our loved ones. We marched, protested, cried, wiped down our groceries, stopped wiping down our groceries, unplugged, breathed, replugged, reengaged. And when music finally flowed, the first song we wrote together was ‘Love Will Work It Out.’ Because conflict and confrontation require bravery, AND so does keeping the faith in the goodness of one another. It’s a big part of what so many people are fighting for- the benefit of the doubt, the ability to be seen as whole, the space to love and trust. It’s been a tough year, but we’ve come out the other side steady and hopeful.”
