Lump, das gemeinsame Projekt der in London lebenden Songwriterin Laura Marling und Mike Lindsay von der Band Tunng erschien in 2018 plötzlich auf der Bildfläche mit einem Debütalbum, das überraschte und Kritiker wie Fans schnell verzauberte. Nun kehrt das Duo schon zurück und veröffentlicht am 30. Juli ihr zweites Album Animal via Partisan Records und zeigt damit wieder, wie gut sie auch abseits von ihren Kernprojekten und außerhalb ihrer Komfortzone zusammen funktionieren. “Half cute, half dark and creepy” – die Songs, die Marling und Lindsay als Lump schreiben, unterscheiden sich von ihren anderen Projekten. Marlings Texte sind spontan, unmittelbar und spielerisch (und stützen sich auf ihr Interesse an der Psychoanalyse). Unterdessen produziert Lindsay eine zugängliche Palette elektronischer Sounds, die an Psychedelik grenzt. Animal wurde in Lindsays Heimstudio in Margate, Kent, aufgenommen und hauptsächlich um seinen Eventide H949 Harmonizer herum konstruiert, denselben Pitch-Shifter, den David Bowie auf Low verwendete.

“Lump is so the repository for so many things that I’ve had in my mind and just don’t fit anywhere in that way”, erklärt Marling. “They don’t have to totally make narrative sense, but weirdly they end up making narrative sense in some way.” Das Projekt wirkte befreiend und besonders; sie fügt hinzu: “It became a very different thing about escaping a persona that has become a burden to me in some way. It was like putting on a superhero costume.” Lindsay sagt: “There’s a little bit of a theme of hedonism on the album, of desires running wild. We created Lump as a sort of persona and an idea and a creature. Through Lump we find our inner animal, and through that animal we travel into a parallel universe.”

Nachdem zuletzt schon der Titelsong und Climb Every Wall aus dem kommenden Album erschienen sind, folgt heute der nächste Vorbote We Cannot Resist, über den Lindsay sagt: “It wants to be this massive pop track, but it’s been twisted. I like that when the chorus comes in you’re like ‘Wow!’ It’s this huge pop chorus, but then it becomes really creepy with the whispered ‘We cannot resist’” Marling ergänzt, “This is another one about hedonism. But it was tricky because it’s such American imagery. I remember we had to stop and start and redo quite a lot of the lyrical takes because saying things like ‘Down to burn rubber’ are quite awkward to say in an English accent.”
