Nachdem die Foals in 2019 mit ihrem ambitionierten zweiteiligen Album-Projekt Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost ums Eck kamen, präsentiert die britische Rock-Band nun schon den ersten Vorboten aus ihrem in 2022 zu erwartenden Nachfolger: Wake Me Up! Und dieser hat alles, was ein Klassiker in der Discographie der Band benötigt! Mitreißende Gitarrenparts, einprägsame Hooks, einen knackigen Rhythmus. Frontmann Yannis Philippakis sagt über den Song: “There’s a journey that the band has gone on experimenting with different palettes of sound. This time there was a desire to take it back to more of the initial idea of the band where the rhythm, the grooves and the guitars are interlocking architecturally. We wanted to tap into the physicality of music. And we wanted it to feel good.”
Der Song entstand als gedankliche Abschweifung während tagelanger Sessions von Philippakis mit seinen Kollegen Jimmy Smith und Jack Bevan im kleinen, stickigen Proberaum der Band in Peckham, während dem betrückenden vergangenen Pandemie-Winter. Yannis erinnert sich: “With Wake Me Up, I just wanted to write a song about transporting yourself to a better, idyllic situation. I think we all had that feeling of the last eighteen months being like a weird fever dream that felt surreal but very affecting. I think we all wished we could have woken up somewhere else at various points.”
Produziert wurde der Song von John Hill (Portugal.The Man, Florence + The Machine), in Co-Produktion mit Miles James und A.K. Paul (Bruder von Jai Paul), während Grammy-Gewinner Manny Marroquin (Post Malone, Kanye West, Rihanna) für den Mix verantwortlich war. Hill war auch der Chef-Produzent des gesamten neuen Foals-Albums, bei dem auch noch Dan Carey (Tame Impala, Fontaines D.C.), James und Paul mitgearbeitet haben. Wake Me Up dient als Vorbote für das, was vom neuen Album zu erwarten ist – wie Yannis es beschreibt: “Our version of a dance or disco record.“ Während die Lyrics dazu gedacht sind: “Transport oneself out of the oppression of lockdown and the bleakness of last year.”
