Schon seit einigen Monaten verzückt uns das afro-kubanisch-französische Zwillings-Duo Ibeyi immer wieder mit Single-Vorboten aus ihrem neuen, dritten Studio-Album Spell 31, das am 6. Mai via XL Recordings erscheinen wird – so auch heute! Dabei markiert Lavender & Red Roses die nächste hochkarätige Zusammenarbeit, ist darauf doch niemand geringeres als Brit Award-Gewinnerin Jorja Smith zu hören. Diese hatte das Duo im Studio besucht, um das gesamte Album zu hören und sich daraufhin direkt in den Song verliebte. Inhaltlich geht es darum, dass man auch, wenn man jemanden helfen will, sich nur selbst retten kann.
Lisa-Kaindé erzählt über den Song und das Video von Lucrecia Taormina in dem alle drei Musikerinnen zu sehen sind: “We knew we wanted to create something with Jorja that would be different from what we’ve done previously that would allow us to connect with the true meaning of the song. When we came across the three sisters of fate from the Greek mythology that personify fate we knew immediately that it would be the right idea. Clotho, Lachesis, Atropos are sisters, one of them creates the thread of fate, the other analyses it and the third one cuts it. “Lavender and Red Roses” is a song about the feeling we all experience when we love someone troubled. It could be a partner, a sibling, a parent, a friend. We wanted to talk about the pain of witnessing a loved one hurting, repeating patterns and getting lost. And how it triggers in us the desire to reach them, hold them tight and wash their troubles away with lavender and red roses. But the truth is you can’t save them, if they pull you into their darkness, you will have to protect yourself, and allow them to find their own strength and light, their own way.”
Neben Jorja Smith sind auf dem neuen Ibeyi-Album auch Pa Salieu, BERWYN, sowie Ibeyis verstorbener Vater, Mutter und eine Neuinterpretation von Black Flags Rise Above zu hören. Das nächste Kapitel des Schaffens führt die beiden Musikerinnen wieder zu ihren spirituellen Wurzeln des selbstbetitelten Debütalbums zurück. Daneben sind Harmonie, Heilung und Magie die zentralen Themen des Albums, das wieder von XL Recordings-Chef Richard Russell, der auch an den beiden Vorgängern beteiligt war, produziert und aufgenommen wurde.
