Seit 2007 schreiben Holly Laessig und Jess Wolfe, alias Lucius, ihre Songs, in dem sie sich in einer Art Kaffeeplausch zusammensetzen und miteinander besprechen, was ihnen derzeit durch den Kopf geht. Und während ihre beiden Alben Wildewoman (2013) und Good Grief (2016) zwar Allgemeinhin sehr wohlwollend aufgenommen wurde, uns aber nicht so wirklich zu packen wusste, scheinen die beiden bei den Arbeiten im Frühjahr 2020 so richtig unseren Sweetspot getroffen zu haben. Denn ihr neues Album Second Nature (VÖ: 8. April via Second Nature Records) trieft nur so von überschwänglichen Pop-Hymnen, die einen mit großer Geste umgarnen und so gar nicht mehr aus dem Gehör gehen wollen. „It is a record that begs you not to sit in the difficult moments, but to dance through them”, sagt Wolfe. „It touches upon all these stages of grief—and some of that is breakthrough, by the way. Being able to have the full spectrum of the experience that we have had, or that I’ve had in my divorce, or that we had in lockdown, having our careers come to a halt, so to speak. I think you can really hear and feel the spectrum of emotion and hopefully find the joy in the darkness. It does exist. That’s why we made Second Nature and why we wanted it to sound the way it did: our focus was on dancing our way through the darkness.”
Und wie man sich durch die Dunkelheit tanzt zeigt nach den drei bisher veröffentlichten großartigen Singles Heartbursts, White Lies und Next To Normal auch die neue, just veröffentlichte Single Dance Around It, die in Zusammenarbeit mit Sheryl Crow und Brandi Carlile entstand! Laessig und Wolfe über den Song: „In many ways Dance Around It cracked the intention for the entire record; to dance through the darkness. To take what may have been isolating and internal, and instead, make it loud, and put it on display – give it legs to dance. When we brought it to the studio, we asked our dear friends and collaborators (pinch me) Sheryl Crow and Brandi Carlile to sing with us; they were so present and instrumental during the writing and recording of our record – and hearing them sing on this track felt like dancing through that last part of a dark tunnel.”
Das von Dave Cobb und Brandi Carlile produzierte Album ist ein Porträt der Sängerinnen und Songwriterinnen Holly Laessig und Jess Wolfe, in dem sie ihre gegenseitigen Lebensveränderungen – Mutterschaft, Scheidung, ungeplante Karrierepausen – aufzeichnen und in Musik umsetzen. Die 10 Songs entstanden in Nashvilles historischem RCA Studio A und wurde von langjährigen Bandmitgliedern Peter Lalish, Dan Molad und Solomon Dorsey eingespielt, mit zusätzlichen Gast-Beiträgen von Drew Erickson, Rob Moose und Gabriel Cabezas.
