Was Rock und im besonderen Post-Punk anbelangt gehört Dublin sicherlich derzeit zu den spannendsten Schmelztiegeln, ach was sagen wir, zum wildesten Moschpit! Und natürlich kommt auch unsere neuste Lieblingsband eben genau aus Dublin – die Post-Punk Sensation SPRINTS! Anfang Januar erscheint Das Debütalbum Letter To Self, das nur so voller Energie und mitreißenden Melodien strotzt. Sängerin, Gitarristin und Songwriterin Karla Chubb sagt über das Debüt: “It’s a deeply personal and autobiographical album lyrically and in its keythemes, while sonically it explores a space inspired by our love of early 80s gothic, 90s noise rock and more modern influences. It revisits our most vulnerable moments and imbues them with visceral garage-punk. It aims to take the things that are considered inherently negative -feelings of anxiety, anger and rage, and turning them into a positive. Using our experiences to fuel us and pouring them into a positive outlet. It’s cathartic, it’s honest, it’s raw.”
Ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist die gerade erschienene Single Shadow of a Doubt, über die Chubb sagt: “Shadow of a Doubt is our most vulnerable moment to date. It very bluntly deals with the experience of trauma, depression and the aftermath. It was written quite selfishly -to take the weight of some of those feelings off myself by placing them on a page in an attempt to feel like I was healing, or ridding myself of them. An entirely cathartic process. The slow and intensifying build, the crashing drums, swirling guitars and chaotic climax all symbolise that pure terrifying fall into darkness, and the almost silent call for help. It’s the feeling of loneliness, abandonment and exile. It’s shouting out into the void and thinking everyone can hear you, but they can’t. The vocal was recorded in three takes with jagged breaths and some misstepped lyrics purposefully left in. Here, we felt emotion was more important than perfection”
Das Debütalbum entstand im französischen Loire-Tal, wo es innerhalb von zwölf Tagen mit Daniel Fox von Gilla Band als Produzent aufgenommen wurde. Das Ergebnis ist ein umwerfend kraftvolles Album mit der Botschaft für mehr Selbstakzeptanz. Mit Letter To Self gehen SPRINTS mit Leidenschaft und Ausdauer ihren eigenen Weg zur Zufriedenheit und nutzen den Schmerz, um zu wachsen. Inspiriert von Savages reifte ihr Sound zu einem energiegeladenen und ruppigen Garage-Punk, der Einflüsse von den frühen Pixies, Bauhaus, Siouxsie Sioux, IDLES und LCD Soundsystem in sich vereint.
Chubb setzt sich darauf mit ihrer inneren Zerrissenheit auseinander und nutzt ihre Plattform, um Ungleichheit und Themen anzusprechen, die ihr am Herzen liegen, wie die Kampagne für “Repeal The 8th” und den andauernden Kampf der Frauen für körperliche Autonomie, Kämpfe mit Selbstakzeptanz, Identität, psychische Probleme, Sexualität und katholische Schuldgefühle. Zusammenfassend erklärt Chubb zur dem Album inliegenden Botschaft: “No matter what you’re born into, or have experienced, there’s a way to emerge from this and be happy within yourself.”
