Auf der diesjährigen Black Pumas Tour waren die britischen Soul-Newcomer MRCY zuletzt schon als Support zu sehen und überzeugten vollauf – kurze Zeit später kündigten sie ihr Debütalbum Volume 1 via Dead Oceans an. Das Duo Barney Lister und Kojo Degraft-Johnson präsentiert damit ab heute ihre Vision von Soul und lässt sich von den Größen der Kindheit (Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye) bis hin zu Genre-verschmelzenden Modernisten wie Khruangbin oder Sault inspirieren – “it’s like hearing a distant memory,” sagt Barney, “but one that speaks to where you are now”.

Auf ihrem Debütalbum blickt der Sound von MRCY tiefer nach innen und weiter nach außen: Die Debütsingle Lorelei war eine ätherische, jenseitige Geschichte über eine Liebe, die in einer Katastrophe enden sollte, während Flowers In Mourning Afrobeats und Northern Soul in einer ergreifenden Meditation über Familie und Verlust zusammenbrachte. Das Album wird von einer auffälligen, visuellen Ästhetik begleitet, die in Zusammenarbeit mit Harris Elliot entstand und KI, Adinkra-Symbolik und britische Ikonografie zu einem Look – und Sound – verbindet, der bereits unverkennbar MRCY ist. 1. R.L.M

RLM is about being out in London and cruising around with someone that you’re really into and just enjoying being with them whatever the weather.

2. Lorelei

This is a mournful song about losing someone who hurt you. It also relates to the myth of Lorelei who dragged the sailors to the depths of the sea.

3. Purple Canyon

This song is a trippy psychedelic groove about being lost in the desert and your own troubles. We use lots of dub sirens and psychedelic effects to make it feel like you’re in another world.

4. Days Like This

This is a nostalgic song is a throwback to the sound of Northern Soul. It’s about trying to find something that you lost and a nostalgic feeling from the past.

5. California

This is a psychedelic soul tune about London feeling unrecognisable at the best of times due to the hardship you can bear witness to every other day.

6. Flowers in Mourning

Flowers In Mourning is an upbeat Afro-esque tune that has similar sentiments but also eludes to loss and mental health.

7.Powerless

This is uptempo cinematic soul tune about not always feeling like you’re in control of your destiny or the shortcomings you witness within your personal life. However It also talks about encouragement and perseverance.

8. Seven Candles

This sound is a piano led ballad about a past relationship that was given every chance to succeed but no avail.
